Emily: I'm so excited to be here with you today and guys, we have another Emily on the podcast, so of course she's going to be great. ~Um, ~welcome Emily. Thanks for having me. I know
Emily Perry: Emily's are amazing. So cool.
Emily: So where are you currently at again? Remind me what part of the country.
Emily Perry: I'm [00:03:00] in Santa Cruz, California.
Emily: Yes. Okay. So I heard it was like super hot yesterday.
Emily Perry: It's been really hot here. ~Um, ~which is like a little unusual for us. I mean, we get, you know, actually August, September can get our warmest, but you know, we're used to fog and then like sun, you know, so.
Emily: Nice. ~Yeah. Cool. Well, I'm stoked that we can, we connected a few months back.~
~Um, and ~so happy to have you here and you are the founder of doing things with purpose. Right.
Emily Perry: Yes. ~Uh huh. Yeah. ~
Emily: So tell me a little bit about that, specifically the name and a little bit about your podcast that you have too.
Emily Perry: Yeah. So the purpose habit is sort of how we actually rebranded, ~um, my, ~my work, ~uh, ~recently, but I have a podcast called the rock your purpose podcast, and I have been working in, ~I would say ~personal growth and purpose work for.
A couple of decades, I started out in the yoga space. ~So I was, um, actually way back, if we go way, way back, ~I was really into personal growth as a teenager and I used to hang out at like what we would call ~like a ~new age bookstores and, ~um, ~I just dove ~like ~headfirst into personal growth, especially in my ~like ~early [00:04:00] twenties and it stuck and that actually led me into yoga.
And so I started teaching yoga and I started training yoga teachers. ~And, you know, ~teaching at retreats, festivals, leading trainings in ~like ~Costa Rica ~and ~Bali ~and ~Guatemala and just ~like ~all around the world. ~And ~I've kind of circled back in the last ~probably ~five or six years, it was actually since ~like ~2018, the call to really dive deeper into purpose work really, ~um, ~spoke to me.
So that's when I sort of really relaunched the Rock Your Purpose podcast, which is still going strong, which you will be on as well. ~And, uh, which will be really exciting. ~And what I've come to find is that when we create our lives around Like our purpose and what I call your big Yes. It, it's like everything seems to fall into place and we tend to create what I call a pinch me life.
Like this life that looks like way beyond your wildest dreams. Like something that you couldn't even picture because it wasn't even like a possibility, right? And so when we kind of really make purpose a habit and create habits that are purpose [00:05:00] aligned, ~um, ~we start to really live a life that is. Yeah, like that pinch me life.
So that's sort of what I've been doing for the last few years, and it gets me excited every day. So I know it's, it's my purpose for sure.
Emily: Oh, I love that. Awesome. And so when you found out that, you know, you needed to like, talk to other people about your purpose, about their purpose and how that would impact their Can you tell me a little bit about why the term purpose itself?
Really stuck with you. And it's clearly driven your, the majority of your business, right? It's the name of your business and your podcast. So I'd love to know a little bit more about why purpose specifically.
Emily Perry: Yeah. ~So in the, ~so in the yoga tradition, we call it Dharma and there's actually two types of Dharma.
Well, there's many types of Dharma actually, ~um, in Buddhism, we use Dharma in a different way. ~In Buddhism, Dharma means like universal law. ~Um, ~but in ~the, so more of the, ~the yoga traditions of the Indian subcontinent, ~um, ~there's [00:06:00] two types of Dharma. So there's like this universal Dharma. That's like ~the, the, ~the world is at play as it is.
And like, there's this great unfolding happening. And then we have a personal Dharma, what we call a Swadharma, which is like ~a ~personal to ~our ~ourselves. And it's actually up to us to live it into being. And there's actually a text in the yoga tradition called the Bhagavad Gita, where, ~um, ~There's like this moment when, ~so ~Krishna is the charioteer.
He's actually driving this chariot for Arjuna, who is the warrior. And so we are, of course, Arjuna, and we are Krishna in this story. ~But, um, ~Krishna says to Arjuna, like, your purpose is to live your dharma. Like it's better to fail at your own dharma than it is to succeed at someone else's. So it's this idea that we all each have our unique blueprint to live into the world.
And like we actually don't unlock our gifts until we really start to follow that thread. And it is a thread. It's like where it's like a, it's a journey that we're on. [00:07:00] Right. And so when I started to really lean into that and I just, when I discovered some of these, ~you know, ~really old teachings, I mean, some of these teachings are like 5, 000 years old, probably, ~um, ~about Dharma, it really kind of lit something within me.
And I really. ~I ~saw it as a missing link as ~like this, this, ~this thing that once we ~kind of, um, ~tap into it and, ~um, ~lean into it, it starts to open up our lives. ~Like ~the aperture just starts to really open and we start to discover ~like ~our hidden potential, our gifts, ~um, ~meaning, ~um, ~fulfillment and so much more ~like, and ~people are just happier So there's actually many texts in these traditions that talk about Dharma, but there's also this idea that we have ~like ~four purposes that we have ~like this purpose, like ~this purpose to follow our unique Dharma, right?
That's like one of the reasons why we're here. We're also here to create like, ~To want ~we're here to dream our big dream and I call it your big yes, like a lot of us are so disconnected from our yes and we're so disconnected from what we want because of [00:08:00] societal conditioning because of what we've had to go through because of like, you know, trauma from family of origin, you know, stories that people told us things that like your teacher told you when you're in second like a lot of us shut down our, our dreams.
And so We need to tap into our dreams again and then have the means they call it the means to fulfill it. So having the means to fulfill your dharma means. Like taking care of yourself, like having the funds to ~like ~move forward and support other people. ~Um, ~and using, ~um, ~having the health, ~right? ~Having ~the, the, ~the clarity of mind, ~um, ~and the energy, ~right?~
I mean, the thing is, if we're not taking care of ourselves, if we don't have the energy, it's hard to really do these things. These kind of next level things, ~right? ~And then the last thing that we're really here to fulfill is actually called, ~um, ~Moksha, which is a freedom, which is like feeling free. Cause at the end of the day, ~like, ~that's what all this work does.
It's like, it gives you the sense of internal freedom that ~like, ~no matter what comes your way, ~you've got, you know, ~you have the resiliency and ~the, ~the vision to move forward and ~like ~[00:09:00] tackle whatever it is that happens to roll down the path.
Emily: I love that. And so that's powerful. And the ancient texts that you brought in, it's just a really unique way of looking at it.
Cause I know a lot of my listeners are women who are feeling called to a better way of life are feeling called, ~um, ~to rise to their highest self, right? The whole purpose behind rise to her is stepping into the highest power, which is so beautifully aligned with what you do, ~um, ~in rock your purpose. And so a lot of them have gone through really traumatic experiences.
And you mentioned how trauma can impact you stepping into your Dharma. What I also teach about is how, when you experience the lows, like the lowest of lows, the depths, Of despair that also allows you to experience joys and like a pure version of life in a completely different way. [00:10:00] So can you talk a little bit about how you approach struggles and trauma and healing when it comes to finding your purpose and how you would guide a woman.
if she came to you and said, I have no idea what that even means, but I know I need it.
Emily Perry: Yeah, totally. ~And like what you say is so true. Like we, there, ~there can't be light without dark. Like we need ~like ~Yin and Yang, right? So we can't have one without the other. And in fact, there's more old ancient texts from a lot of these traditions, ~um, ~that say like, With the light comes a shadow, right?
With the nectar of immortality comes the halahala, which is the poison. Like we don't, you can't have one without the other. And it's how we show up and handle the, the challenge and the, and the shadow that really is what makes the difference, right? So, ~um, ~yeah, I really love that. And struggles, like, Struggles are opportunities to grow and it's actually the people who've gone through the most that are the biggest healers, that are like the people who are doing the work [00:11:00] right on this planet because they've seen the contrast, right?
And ~when you, ~when you go through struggles, when you go through, ~um, uh, you know, ~obstacles blocks, no matter like how big or how small, they do so many things. ~They, ~they unlock your gifts in a lot of ways because you have to really stretch yourself to get through. Right. And, ~uh, ~one of my teachers calls it like being squeezed through the eye of the needle, where ~it's like, ~it's like you come out the other side, a totally different person.
And in that squeeze, like you're getting stretched, you're having to like reach for a totally different version of yourself that you don't even know what it looks like, you know. ~Um, ~and that's the challenge is that we often can't see. ~like ~what the other side looks like. And we can't always see the next five steps ahead, but we just need to see like that one next step ahead.
Right. ~Um, ~and so struggle is an opportunity and ~I work, ~I work with Tony Robbins and, ~um, ~he always says that ~like, ~Your challenges, like reframing them to be opportunities is actually one of the biggest gifts that we can give to ourselves because we can [00:12:00] look at them as like, okay, ~like ~what I get out of this and how I get through this is actually going to be not only a way I can support maybe other people and getting through what they're going through, but it's also a way I can rise into the next level version of myself.
Right. Because that's how ~we, ~we grow into the next version of who we are. ~Um, ~so if we feel like we're stuck in a rut, ~like we feel ~like we're at a rock bottom, if we feel like we're being challenged, like the world is changing around us ~that ~in a way that we don't want it to change, or if we feel like internally we need to make a change.
~It's just like an, ~it's an invitation to ~like ~be in that stretch, right. And take just one step forward, even if it feels ~like ~super uncomfortable or like what I like to say is ~like, ~it feels sweaty. ~Like, you know what I mean? ~Like, you're just ~like. ~Sweating at the thought of it. ~Um, ~but it's an opportunity for us ~to, ~to do that.
And, ~um, ~we really, we do level up through challenges, right? We, we like rise into that rise to her, like it's exactly what you do, right? You, you rise into that next level version of who you are and that, that next identity is actually really important. And we do this many times in [00:13:00] our life, right? We, we grow our container.
And we're, we're kind of being called to that next version of who we are, but we just, we're in this, it's like the messy middle is what I call it. Like when you're like shedding the old container, but like, you don't feel completely at that next place yet. It's like super uncomfortable. And like, anxiety driven, like ridden, you know, but it's like, that's the stretch.
And that's when we're really, you know, having to call into ourselves ~to like, ~to make those steps forward into the next version of who we are. So we can see it as an opportunity. I mean, I can't tell you ~like ~how many times I've said yes to things that ~like, ~I really was not ready for, but it stretched me into the person who I am now.
And so now it's like, okay, ~I can, ~I can show up for something ~and like, ~and I can figure it out. Right. Because I know I can lean into that self trust that ~I can, ~it's figureoutable because I've ~like ~been in these little stretches in my life over time. Does that make sense?
Emily: Yeah, [00:14:00] totally. It makes sense. And I think the idea of stretching yourself, ~right, ~is really powerful here.
And for those people that are listening to this saying, I'm in such a hard season of my life, knowing that That stretch and that ability to be resilient is only preparing you to step into the next phase of your life and handle it ~with resistant, ~with resilience, and also preparing your nervous system to accept the newness, accept the change while it's going through this evolution of shedding the old container.
~I think that's a, that was a really beautiful analogy of how, how you use that word. ~So for the people. Who are feeling this calling to step into their true purpose, and they think they know what it is, but for a lot of women, we've been taught to disconnect from our intuition and trauma in itself requires us to disconnect from our intuition in order to survive traumatic experiences.
How would you go about instructing? A woman who has just gone through really hardships and struggles and says, I think this is it, but how do I know that this is actually my dharma, actually my [00:15:00] purpose?
Emily Perry: Yeah. So there's a few things. ~I mean, a lot of it's going to be correct. ~So I don't know if you've ever done the full body.
Yes. Do you? I don't know if you know that technique at all. Yeah. Okay. I don't know if you teach that, but, ~um, ~it's what we call full, like, so connecting with your true. Yes. Right. So we do an exercise where we, ~you know, ~think of something that's really, ~you know, um, ~a time in your life or a moment in your life that you can really connect to where you feel like this full body, like, yes, this was amazing.
This is a yes for me. And then we do the same with a no. Like you find a really clear no, like when something is like not for you at all. ~Um, ~And just starting to connect with that on a daily basis, actually, I think is really powerful. And so the thing is about self trust is it's built in everyday, small, like purpose habits, right?
~Like 20, ~like two millimeter shifts is Tony likes to call it. So it's in everyday choices and decisions. that you build the self trust to start to step into a trust of your intuition, right? So checking in with yourself on like the smallest things like should I have this cup of tea or should I have a cup of coffee?
~Um, ~should I, you know, [00:16:00] and like ~every, ~every little choice that you make checking in with your inner yes and like really getting to know that inner yes, right? So that you can start to when thoughts come up, you can check in with yourself and you can ask yourself like, is this true? Like is this me or is this like starting to discern what we call discernment like starting to navigate that discerning is like is this true is this me or is this like Mrs.
Pecora from first grade, you know, or whatever. Right. Yeah. That was my story. Okay. She was lovely, but not so lovely. ~So, um, ~so starting to like take those small actions and Having tools also at your disposal where you can like self regulate. And, ~um, ~when you're in a stretch being able to what we call, so the conscious leadership group is a coaching there.
Like they've done a lot of coaching called conscious leadership coaching. ~Um, ~they have a kind of a program that Mike, some of my coaches were trained in and I'm kind of really into that, that kind of [00:17:00] model. And they call it like a shift move. So what happens often is that we encounter moments where we're asked to like be at our upper limit and that's where we're in the stretch, right?
Where we show up, we do the thing and then having ways to like regulate ourselves and like really allow our nervous system to like to reset at this higher level. So like changing your breath, changing your body stance, like changing your posture, getting up and moving, ~um, ~talking it out. Like there's all kinds of ways that you can, you can create like these shift moves in your life so that you can stay present to what's happening and like stay in your body and like really feel into what's happening so that you start to integrate that experience and really start to, to level up.
If you're a highly ambitious woman, you already know the effort and discipline it takes to achieve your goals. Unfortunately though, most exhausted high achievers make the costly mistake of only defining success within the masculine energy realm and [00:18:00] never defining their personal values when it comes to the success in life that they want.
But without connecting to your intuition, without defining what your soul needs, you'll waste your entire life achieving Plenty of external goals and metrics of success while getting burnt out, unfulfilled, and feeling isolated and used. And I do not want to continue to see women struggle creating a life that doesn't light them up because they have created their blueprint for success based on other people's opinions.
And that is why I created my brand new program, Aligned Ambition, for the highly ambitious women who are ready to go beyond what other people think about them and create a life that truly lights them up from the inside out. So if you've been questioning if your career, if your current stage in life is really all that is meant for you, and you have been looking for that thing to confirm.
If you [00:19:00] should take the next step or what your step should even be, this is for you. I cannot wait to have you inside. I have a priority list created just for you to find out the information when it launches next. So go ahead to the show notes and make sure to get on there. So you have first insight of when the doors open because seats go fast.
And I cannot wait to have you in the second launch of Aligned Ambition. It's going to be good.
Emily Perry: So, ~um, ~and you know, trusting intuition, ~it, you know, ~comes with a lot of. shedding old stories, you know, so giving yourself that opportunity to like, Do some of that journaling work. We're like, okay, ~what are some of the, ~what are some of the things that are going through my mind? Like, what are some of those stories I tell myself?
And like, are they true? Are they not true? Are these ready to be let go of? And then how can I start navigating forward and starting to like, yeah, listen to my own inner [00:20:00] voice? ~Um, ~in everyday life as much as you can, that's going to make a huge impact. ~Yeah. ~
Emily: I love that. You said something that I caught on to, am I ready to let go of that?
Tell me a little bit more about what it means to acknowledge if you are or are not ready to let go of a story that maybe isn't serving your highest good and how someone can go and about doing that compassionately, right? And cultivating that self compassion for themselves.
Emily Perry: Mm hmm. Well, the thing is, is most, ~so we call, ~so limiting beliefs are like these inner, these inner barriers to our growth.
And they are beliefs that we have that are not only not true, but they hold us back from living our best lives, right? And so ~the, ~the challenge is discerning, you know, whether they're like our story. Are they these inner barriers? Are they, is this really true? Is this mine? This is not mine. Right. And [00:21:00] the thing is about like limiting beliefs and these stories that we carry is they were at one time a tool.
They were often at one time, they often got us through something. And the idea is that we start to navigate through them and ~like ~replace them with ~like ~a belief that actually supports our journey forward, that actually supports our growth and supports ~like ~where we're going and ~like ~starting to, ~to kind of ~get that distance, that space to see ~like, Oh, ~like, Oh, isn't that sweet?
Like, Oh, I used to think that like, allowing that. It's like, Oh, Yeah. That's so cute, you know? But ~um, ~sometimes we're not like, if we can't see how we're seeing this as like a fact, like maybe we know mentally that like, oh yeah, this isn't true. But like, it's still really, you know, It still emotionally grabs you, like really in a deep way.
It's just something to sit with for a while and start to think ~and like, ~and really work with. And cause what's [00:22:00] going to happen is one day you're going to get space around it. Like you're going to feel disconnected from it. And it's almost like a gap happens between you and that belief where you're like, you, you get to see it from a different perspective.
And that's when you know, you're ready to let it go. ~Um, ~because we can't force these things to happen. And it's just part of the growth journey and what's going to happen anyway. As we grow is that ~we, ~we bump up against new like upper limits, like we bump up against new belief systems that we have, you know, so there's no rush.
It's just, it's an awareness process and starting to think, you know, as you journal through them or whatever process you work with, like looking at them and being like, okay, I know this isn't true, but it really feels true still. And then it's not opportunity just ~to like ~to work with it in a really gentle way until you start to feel that gap happen.
If that makes sense.
Emily: Yeah. That makes complete sense. And what just came up that maybe could be helpful for our listeners too, is as people are diving into this realm of personal development of healing, ~we, ~a lot of [00:23:00] people I've noticed, I'm wondering if you have the same experience with noticing and that it's like ~an, ~Oh, All or nothing.
Like I have to completely fix everything, or I feel like I'm going to drift back and become that version of myself that I want to distance from. Right. And so it's cultivating that awareness that once you decide and make that decision to move forward, you will never be the same ever again. Right. And so trusting that and reminding yourself that on a daily basis.
And what came to my mind is let's think about Olympic athletes were just finishing up the Olympics. Now the summer games, and we saw a big comeback with Simone Biles and how the last Olympics she walked out. It wasn't because she thought that she wasn't good. It was saying, I know that at this point I'm at that upper upper limit.
And for me to go to the next limit, I need to take some space and I need to step back. And I'm wondering if you could speak to that about how it's, really cultivating that self compassion and [00:24:00] awareness that it's not about the traditional old boy ways of growth, of grinding, of production in this realm of growth and healing, but it's really self awareness and knowing that eventually You can come back to it.
Emily Perry: Yeah, I mean, ~there's definitely, I think, it's, ~it's like a lean back sort of, ~I think, ~energetically. It's like leaning back a little bit more into yourself and allowing things to, there's a little bit of allowing that needs to happen, right? ~Um, ~because change will happen. We can just choose, though. Like, are we going to be a part of the change?
Are we going to be consciously involved in the change? Or are we going to just let it happen to us, right? ~And so there's that, ~when you're choosing to do this work that people do with you and in your community, it's like, that's a conscious choice. And so know that ~like, Every ~just that choice itself is putting you in a different place.
Number one. Number two, I'm also, I'm one of those people who's like a lot, I've done a lot of things. So I'm also a trained acupuncturist and herbalist. So I actually treated patients for many years here in California. And part of what we [00:25:00] see energetically in that medicine is that people are, ~are like, ~Once you make that conscious choice, once you make that shift, you are a different person energetically, right?
So there's like, you are not that person that you were before the decision was made. Like you've stepped through a threshold. ~Um, it's like, ~it's like crossing through that ~like ~threshold into the next room, right? And so you become, ~you know, ~a different person entirely and allowing ~the ~the aperture to open through your work is ~like ~a beautiful way to create change.
I mean, there's a lot of ways to go through obstacles, right? You can go around them, you can dissolve them. So like, just like meditation is a really great way to like, start to just allow them to like literally just sort of dissolve before your eyes. You can push through them. Which is maybe like a little bit more like, and there are times where maybe you do have to push through something like you're in a moment like traveling or something and it's like, okay, I have to, I got to get through this, you know?
~Um, ~but then you can [00:26:00] also ~like ~lean back and let things flow around you, like leaning into the river, ~you know, um, ~floating down the river with it and letting it, ~um, ~kind of take you to a nice ~little. ~little Eddie that, ~that, um, ~is a softer landing. ~Um, ~there's a lot of ways to work with obstacles. ~Um, and. ~I think pushing through isn't always the answer.
it's often, ~you know, ~not the most compassionate way to ourselves and like we only do to others what we can do to ourselves, right? So ~like ~the more compassionate ~what ~we are ~with oth ~with ourselves, the more compassionate we can be with others. The more empathetic we are with ourselves, the more empathetic we can be with others.
Like ~it's, it's, ~it's really like ~the, ~the limits to how we can show up with other people are the limits to the way that we can show up to ourselves. With ourselves, right? It actually starts with us. And so. Letting that be an opportunity to, ~yeah, ~lean back into ourselves and not having to ~like ~force our way through, but instead ~like ~asking questions is a really great way.
So ~like, what, ~like, what is the opportunity here? Or ~like, ~how can I be more gentle with myself here? Like asking questions opens doors. [00:27:00] And so, ~um, ~just ~asking yourselves, ~Asking yourself a question could be a really powerful ~um, ~way. It's actually a shift moved as well, like a curiosity. It's like, Oh, isn't that interesting?
Hmm. ~Wow. ~Wow. Emily, you're doing that again. Isn't that interesting? Like no judgment, like just like noticing, getting curious, you know, ~um, ~can be really like powerful way forward, you know?
Emily: Absolutely. Yeah. I think curiosity is. a beautiful way to step into self compassion and to like integrate humor and be like, oh, there she goes again.
And yeah, it's, I think that's beautiful. And I enjoy how you really described, there are different ways to handle obstacles. And something you said too, is a thing Oftentimes repeat is that you can either consciously agree to take power in the situation or let it happen to you. Life will continue to happen.
Life will continue to flow, but are you going to be an active participant? And so I think for a lot of our listeners, they have been unconscious [00:28:00] and letting it happen to them for so long. Right. And now they're starting to wake up and now they're starting to get a little uncomfortable, right? So they're having that cognitive dissonance.
Of noticing, oh, crap, what I've built my entire life on isn't what I think my purpose is. So for someone that's wondering, like, how do I go about taking the first step to confirm what my dharma or purpose is? What should they do?
Emily Perry: ~Yeah. So, I mean, yeah, ~I love ~that, ~that idea too. ~Like ~that kind of dissonance ~too, ~I think is a beautiful place to be.
Yeah. Because ~it's, it's, it's, ~it's, when you're at that place, you know, like it's an invitation to notice that ~your inner, ~your inner expression doesn't match your outer expression. Like your outer circumstances aren't matching who you are anymore or what you want. ~Right. Um, ~and so, ~yeah, ~tapping into that big yes.
~Um, ~It really starts with starting to listen to ourselves and like tapping into our inner why ~right ~so like
Emily: you talk more about what that [00:29:00] means.
Emily Perry: ~Yeah, yeah, ~yeah. So our inner why is ~a. Um, it's the, ~the reason ~we're moving, ~we move forward through the world. ~Right. ~And so, you know, I know for myself, like when I was younger, my why was, ~you know, ~very different.
It was just like, wow, I want to go to, my why was to get to the next party or like to get to the next whatever, you know, and then a kids and like, you know, your why's, my why was wrapped up and children and like their why and getting them moving forward. ~Right. Um, ~and then as they've grown, it's sort of like that deeper why starts to emerge.
And so when we start to think about what we want, and this is like a Byron Katie practice, it's, you know, we start to ask yourself, why, like, why do you want what you want? And maybe it's like a new car, maybe it's a house, maybe it's like something material, right? And start to just work through that. Like, okay, well, why, why do I, why is this car so important to me?
And then you can write a journal about that. And it's like, okay, why, well, why is that so important to me? And start to kind of really move through some of those layers of like, of what's at the heart of, like, [00:30:00] of what's moving you forward. And so sometimes it is like, ~um, ~an old belief or sometimes it is like a core wound or sometimes it is, you know, ~um, ~like this core question that we're asking ourselves that's moving us forward.
And so once we can kind of tap into that, it allows us to make decisions and choices that feel aligned with our inner yes. which is another great way to kind of navigate that space. ~Um, ~as opposed to like just saying yes to things that like, because they're there, you know, cause every yes that we say is a no to something else.
Right. And ~that, ~that something else might be more appropriate for where we want to be going. ~Um, ~But starting to navigate that space because our purpose changes, like our why changes and grows, but often what happens is like underneath it, we do have like this core question that we're asking, right? And so for me, ~like, it's, it's sort of like, I, I, ~my core question is like, I want people to live these happy and fulfilling lives and like really ~like, like ~[00:31:00] hooked into their purpose.
So they're like doing the work that they're meant to do in the world and like sharing their gifts. Cause it's like, start to see how so many people have this like untapped potential. And you're like, if you could only see what I see, you know, especially like being in the yoga space and, ~you know, Um, ~training like hundreds of yoga teachers.
It's like you can see ~like what they're, ~what they've got inside if we could just tap into it, ~you know? Um, ~and everybody has that. Everyone has hidden gifts, right? ~Um, ~and so part of ~like ~the work is, ~yeah, ~listening to that inner voice. ~Um, ~wanting what you want, like first giving yourself permission to want what you want.
I think some of the healing actually starts with going way back there to like learning to dream your dream. learning to want what you want and being okay, like giving yourself permission to want what you want, because that's for a lot of, especially women, that's really healing because they've been told to not want a lot of things.
And then also giving yourself permission to say not that, right? So to get really clear on what you don't want. So that's actually often a first step for people is [00:32:00] to make that list or start to journal about, okay, what, ~what did, ~what do I not want? ~And we do this, like in my program, um, Unbound Purpose, we actually start with this.~
It's like getting super clear on what you don't want, because that's actually going to allow you to navigate towards a different direction. Right. ~Um, ~and getting super clear on what you don't want so you can start to navigate towards, towards your purpose and towards what you do want. And then giving yourself permission to like dream that dream and visualize like your future self.
We do a lot of visualization where we start to like really visualize that, like that future self and like who she is and who I'm stepping into, who I'm getting called to grow into and what that dream is like, what do they do? What do they dream about? Like, what do they care about? Like, who are they serving?
Like, what's important to ~them? What's like, what's a no for ~them? What's a yes for them? You know, and starting to really give ourselves permission, I think is probably the heart of all this, is like giving ourselves permission. Right. And that's actually for many women, the hardest part is the permission, like the permission to dream.
~Um, ~and like a lot of the work that we [00:33:00] do is discerning, is this my dream or is this someone else's dream? This kind of circles back to limiting beliefs, which we cover in, in Unbound Purpose. ~It's like a, ~it's really about limiting beliefs in a lot of ways. ~But um, Yeah. ~It's really discerning. Like, is this my dream or was this a dream that was like handed to me that ~I, ~I picked up unconsciously and been carrying around, ~you know, um, I don't know if you've experienced that, Emily, like being like, Oh, this is not my dream.~
Emily: I mean, 100%, it's one of the core messages behind what I teach and aligned ambition, right? It's so like everything. So tied together and I love it. It really is understanding the brain and understanding those limiting beliefs. ~Um, ~but what came up like one last question that I definitely want to get in that I think your perspective would be really beneficial to our listeners is for the women that are feeling guilty.
They're recognizing their purpose and they're recognizing. ~Um, ~maybe a little bit of chaos that's going to cause their family or a little bit of disruption that it may cause because oftentimes when we choose ourselves, that's ~a rep, like ~a rebellion against [00:34:00] what we are socialized to be. So, and also when we step into our purpose, we tend to up level really quickly.
We tend to jump in income goals really quickly. I know for me, I doubled my income super quickly when I figured out that purpose. ~Um, ~and then also, you know, I healed a lot quicker. And there's some guilt associated with that. I had a client yesterday that they were explaining the guilt that they were feeling, because if they received, Would that make them be like the other people, like the other one percenters that then are considered greedy, not good.
So I would love to hear your perspective on how that is actually probably not the case.
Emily Perry: Yeah, ~so, ~so I don't know if you're familiar with Gay Hendricks and The Big Leap. ~I don't know. You're on it. So ~if you're listening to this and you have not read The Big Leap, read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. ~It's um, ~the conscious leadership group thing I mentioned, like their work is kind of based on his work.
~Um, and he, so ~in The Big Leap, he talks about these inner barriers to growth, like these [00:35:00] hidden barriers to growth. And he talks about having a thermostat setting. Where like in different areas of our life and our finances and our personal life and our family life and our career, we have an inner thermostat.
And so it's kind of like I said, at a limit. So maybe I'm at 70 degrees at work, but then if I, if I get a raise and I hit to 95 degrees, my tendency might be to sabotage because I'm not comfortable at that 90 degrees. ~Um, and so, you know, just being aware of that, that happens. But, um, ~In terms of the guilt, it's one of those inner barriers to growth.
It's actually a limiting belief. It's like a story that we've been told, meaning like, if I have this, then it means this, right? And so it's an opportunity for us to, to choose a new meaning, right? ~Um, ~because the truth is, is that we're models for people and like the more that we shine, we're giving people permission to shine.
Right. The more that you do the work, like maybe you, you know, so for some people, it might be, you know, getting in shape. It might be taking [00:36:00] that job. It might be downsizing. It might be moving to the country. It might be like not starting a family. It might be starting like, whatever it happens to be. ~Um, ~you're actually ~giving permission to be more Like other people, you're ~giving permission for other people to be more authentically themselves because you are in your authenticity and actually authenticity is magnetic.
What I actually find is that when people do step forward and they're like, you know what, that guilt is not mine. Like, thank you, Gil. Thank you for like, thank you for, for showing me this sticky point, you know, and, but I'm going to let you go and let you, you know, let someone else carry you, ~um, ~instead. And, ~um, ~you know, instead of being in our authenticity, we, actually become magnetic.
So like people are magnetized to that. So people will be, want to be around you. Like people want to go to the gym with you. People want to hear like, what are you doing? Like you look like you're just glowing. Like it's really, it is really magnetic when you step into your authenticity. So the guilt, [00:37:00] you can ask yourself, like, is this true?
Is this mine?
Emily: ~Um, ~
Emily Perry: and sometimes guilt can be a way to hold ourselves back. It can be a little self sabotaging, I'm just saying. It can be a fear expression. So it can be like, okay, this feels really right, but it's so scary. And so what's my habit? My habit is to feel guilty. And that just pulls me back into my comfort zone, right?
And so starting to notice like those habitual emotions that pop up, ~um, ~because. I mean, ~I'm going to be, I'm going to be totally like honest, ~we can't always trust our emotions. ~Um, ~we can't always trust our thoughts or our emotions because they're actually pretty habitual. ~Um, ~and if you're really dealing with a challenging emotion in your life, you can start tracking every time you feel it during the day.
And so my meditation teachers in the Tibetan lineage, they used to have us carry little, ~like, um, ~beans and we drop one in ~like ~a pocket whenever we felt that emotion that was really triggering for us. So ~like you'd, ~you'd walk around with a [00:38:00] pocket full of guilt or you'd walk around with ~like ~a pocket full of ~like ~unworthiness, ~you know, ~and you'd see ~like, ~physically ~see like, ~okay, ~like ~this is a habitual emotion.
And ~like, ~maybe this isn't true, ~like ~maybe this isn't mine. And it just gives you ~like ~that space, again, to create the gap. You can just start to see ~like, ~oh, ~okay, like ~how much of this is true? How much of this is not true? How much of this is habit? How much of ~it is ~this is ~like ~a pattern that is keeping me safe?
And are there other ways that I can keep myself safe? So that. The guilt doesn't have to run the show. The fear doesn't have to run the show. And so I'm sure you offer so many tools, but, ~um, ~yeah, finding those tools, like, okay, what makes me feel safe? Like, what's another habit I can create another purpose habit that I can create that creates that sense of safety so that I can, you know, make that call or do whatever it is.
And no, I can kind of feel ~Yeah, ~yeah. like, held in some way. If that makes sense. I love that. ~Yeah. ~
Emily: ~So, ~
Emily Perry: ~yeah, ~
Emily: [00:39:00] Everything you said is just so powerful. I feel like we could talk for freaking forever. I know, I know. Let's just say. ~Um, ~those people who don't want to be habitual in their fear and habitual on their guilt.
Can you talk to us a little bit? Like, what are you offering right now? ~Um, ~how can people work with you? How can people find you and then like any last things that you want to tell the audience?
Emily Perry: Oh, yeah. Well, ~um, yeah, I think, ~I think the first step though, ~is making that ~is deciding, right, is just ~being like, ~deciding that you want something different.
And that's actually often like the sweatiest. It was like making that choice and that decision, ~um, to, ~to choose another way forward. ~Um, yeah. ~Yeah. So I have something coming up called unbound purpose. And when this goes live, it will either be live or there will be a, ~you know, first, like an access ~first access wait list happening.
~Um, but ~it's ~a. ~a workshop, ~like ~a six part workshop where we shatter those inner barriers to living your wildest dreams, right? And so I give you the exact strategies, ~um, ~that I use with my clients and ~like what I call ~inspired action takers, ~um, ~to transform your life so that you can, ~you know, ~wake up excited every [00:40:00] day, ditch the someday mindset, ~because often We keep putting things off to someday, um, ~and really create that fulfilling kind of pinch me life that exceed your wildest dreams.
And so unbound purpose is we, you know, we work through strategies to, ~um, ~break through those limiting beliefs. And then we start to realign with what's true to us. ~Um, right. We, ~we, ~um, kind of ~bust through those beliefs, we clear them out and then we realign and start to ~like ~dream our dream once again and start to create our own roadmap to our most fulfilling life.
And it's like my favorite thing to do on the planet, this work. ~Um, and so ~this is actually a brand new version of a program I've run, ~um, ~where we're just kind of taking it to the next level. So that's happening and people can go to PurposeHabit. com. ~Um, ~slash unbound, ~um, ~and get more information there. And ~um, yeah, so ~I'd love to have people to join us.
And because my, at the heart of what we do is really just helping people align their life with what matters most. And so it's finding that what matters most and then creating that alignment because a two millimeter shift is like Tony [00:41:00] Robbins likes to say will point you in an entirely different direction if you're in a boat, right?
So just making that tiny little navigational change will, will take you to a totally different destination. So we need to figure out like where we are now. And we also need to figure out where we want to go. Right. So that we can actually navigate forward. And so that's what we do, ~um, ~together ~in our, ~in Unbound Purpose and on the podcast as well and Rock Your Purpose podcast, there's a lot of, ~uh, ~support there too, and doing all this work.
